“Ron’s just a master at his craft,” says the British actress.
Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a bumpy road to the screen, after original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were booted from the movie mid-filming and replaced by Ron Howard for a lengthy reshoot.
But the stars are feeling optimistic about the project despite the behind-the-scenes drama. Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is playing an unrevealed (but reportedly CGI-based) role in Solo, and spoke to IGN about the experience of working with Howard while promoting her upcoming BBC America thriller Killing Eve at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
“The handover there was done with such warmth and generosity from everybody, and Ron’s just a master at his craft; he’s going to make a beautiful film out of it,” she said of the transition between directors. “You just really trust him and it was just really exciting to work with him. I mean, it would’ve been exciting to just pass him in a corridor, let alone for him to be parachuted in to the film you’re working on.”
When asked how much of her role was reshot compared to Lord and Miller’s version of the film, Waller-Bridge said, “We’d done some really, really great stuff with Chris and Phil that everyone was really thrilled with, and I think a lot of that will still be in it.”
Her co-star, Donald Glover (who will play the younger iteration of Lando Calrissian), recently downplayed the number of reshoots he participated in when talking to reporters at TCA, saying there were “Not a lot at all, at least not for me. I think we’ve all never been faced with anything like that and I think he did a good job of coming and tell us he didn’t want to change what we were doing at all. He wanted us to remain confident in our vision. He just wanted to sculpt it in a way.”
That contradicts what Paul Bettany has said of the film — the Avengers star, who is playing an “intergalactic gangster,” told Total Film in December that Howard “reshot a lot more than was originally intended,” but perhaps that doesn’t relate to Waller-Bridge and Glover’s performances, since Bettany was cast by Howard after Lord and Miller exited.
Solo: A Star Wars story is slated for release on May 25, 2018 and also stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson as his mysterious mentor, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, and Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newton in unknown roles.
