Disney has reportedly tapped 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to helm The Sword in the Stone live-action remake.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fresnadillo is currently in talks with Disney to take on the project, which would be a reimagining of the 1963 animated classic. A release date for the remake has not been set yet.
Game of Thrones writer-producer Bryan Cogman reportedly wrote the script, with Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book) producing. The original movie’s story follows the magician Merlin mentoring a young King Arthur, and it is the last film released by Disney before Walt Disney’s death.
The Sword in the Stone is the second of two Merlin films currently in development at Disney, with the other one being The Merlin Saga, which Alien director Ridley Scott may helm. The Merlin Saga is said to be based on T.A. Barron’s novel series and follows the rise of a young Merlin.
Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) is penning the script for The Merlin Saga, with Scott also potentially producing.
