As of this issue, it appears that Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson are officially an item again. The two crossed paths at a press conference for the corporation Alchemax, only for the inevitable supervillain attack to force Spider-Man into action and MJ to take up her old role of covering for her ex-boyfriend. When Peter arrived at her apartment to thank her and collect his discarded clothes, they wound up rekindling that old romance all over again.

This is a significant moment for both characters, one many fans have been waiting for ever since 2007’s One More Day eliminated the Peter/MJ marriage and restored Peter to his old status quo as a swinging bachelor. Both characters’ lives have changed quite a bit in the years since, with Peter temporarily becoming a wealthy industrialist and MJ taking control of the Tony Stark-less Stark Enterprises.

Marvel has been catering to fans who want the Peter/MJ romance restored in recent years thanks to Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, a series set in an alternate universe where the two stayed married and are now raising a teenage, spider-powered daughter. But this marks the first time in over a decade that Peter and MJ have been an item in the regular Marvel Universe.

However, it remains to be seen how long this rekindled romance will last. The next issue of Amazing Spider-Man kicks off “Go Down Swinging,” writer Dan Slott’s swan song on the series and a story that pits Spidey against the combined might of Norman Osborn and Carnage. As the collateral damage grows, MJ may soon be reminded why she cut things off with Peter in the first place.
