“It scares the f—ing s–t out of me or something.”

Joaquin Phoenix has opened up about playing the Joker in Warner Bros.’ upcoming origins film and why the role “scares” him.

Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star in a low budget Joker origin film from director Todd Phillips. Speaking to Collider, Phoenix revealed it took him a lot of time to decide whether or not he should take on the role.

What appealed to Phoenix the most about the film is the chance to work with Phillips and the director’s unique vision for the project. The story will reportedly take place in the 80s and will play out as a gritty crime drama rather than a blockbuster superhero film.

“He seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he’s trying to say,” Phoenix said, speaking about Phillips. “And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project.

“It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f—ing s–t out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Phoenix revealed he’s been thinking about a role like the Joker for a few years now and also hinted the movie won’t be connected to the larger DCEU.

“I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre,” Phoenix said. “I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … It feels unique, and I think more then anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting.”

Meanwhile, Jared Leto is reportedly still his getting Joker film as well.
