Is this the future of animation?

In August, news broke that development platform Unity Technologies was collaborating with Disney Animation on a series of shorts based on Big Hero 6: The Series, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek at the finished product.

The three shorts, titled “Baymax Dreams,” utilized Unity’s real-time rendering software (traditionally used for games development) which, according to a Disney press release, “gives studios the freedom to do layout, animation blending, light, VFX, render, and composite all in one place, at the same time,” and thus speed up the animation process considerably.

“Working in Unity is like having every department at your fingertips — it completely revolutionizes the production process,” said Baymax Dreams director Simon J. Smith. “The results of Unity’s parallel, non-linear workflow and real-time rendering meant we were able to make ‘Baymax Dreams’ in half the time — allowing us to spend the other half on experimentation and the creative process.”

Above, IGN has an exclusive preview of the first short, “Baymax Dreams of Evil Sheep.” All three shorts will debut Sept. 15 on DisneyNOW and Disney Channel’s YouTube.
